I had been single for a few months and thought that I would get back into the dating pool.  Like thousands of others, I thought that I would try an online dating site.  Quite a few friends recommended eHarmony.

Everyone I spoke with had great stories of knowing someone who had dated or were married after meeting through that site.  I signed up and for the first few weeks I didn’t get matched up with anyone who caught my interest.  Then one day I was matched up with ____.  We went through the stages of Guided Communication and exchanged questions and answers.

Eventually we made it to the stage of open communication where you can exchange messages.   Although she didn’t seem my type I thought “Obviously I’m having a problem finding Miss Right.  Maybe the site knows better than I do.”  We agreed to meet.

We met on a Sunday afternoon.

From the moment we started talking I knew that it wouldn’t go any farther between the two of us.  But the conversation was nice and we chatted for quite a while.   When we left ____ asked if I wanted to get together again.  I was very non-committal and told her that I would let her know.  Two days later I sent her a message through the site: It was nice meeting you and I enjoyed our conversation.  Unfortunately I didn’t feel a spark.  Hopefully you’ll find a better connection with one of your future prospects.

I’m not a jerk and thought that was the nicest way to end our [extremely brief] encounter.  I then closed our Match.  That night my phone rang.  I didn’t recognize the number so I didn’t answer it.  Later on I listened to the voicemail and it was ____.  As soon as I heard her voice I deleted it.  The next day while at the office my phone rang.  It was a different phone number which I also didn’t recognize.  Minutes later I listened to the voicemail message.  Keep in mind:

• ____ and I only met once
• we didn’t even know each other’s last names
